Some say a dog is man’s best friend, but sometimes that’s not always the case.

Every dog is unique and therefore requires different treatment when it comes to training them to live with us harmoniously.

Why Does My Dog Need Obedience Training?

SportDOG training collar reviews

Obedience training is when you teach your dog to respond correctly to your commands through either positive or negative reinforcement.

For example, such commands as ‘come’ or ‘sit’ are commonly involved in obedience training.

Your pet is generally considered to be obedient if it virtually always obeys your commands under normal circumstances.

This form of training is also used to discourage undesirable behaviors such as barking at other dogs or pulling on the leash when out on a walk.

If your dog exhibits such hostile behaviors and if you are generally just finding your pet hard to control, then obedience training can help straighten out such behavioral issues.

Such training teaches your dog to listen and respect your commands meaning your dog will be easier to keep under control.

Dogs can, for instance, get distracted by the presence of other dogs, making them hard to control, and so your pet may want to run over to them which, if they are on a leash, may not be desirable for the owner to be tagged in such a way.

Obedience training attempts to teach your dog not to get distracted from the commands you give and not just to listen and respect your commands, but most importantly to adhere to them.

This type of training extends beyond just having a mild-mannered dog that can sit when it is told to, it is also vitally important as it can keep your dog safe in dangerous situations.

Such situations arise when crossing a busy road, for example, in such a case you need your pet to stay calm and sit when commanded to do so rather than tug on the leash, potentially in front of cars.

Furthermore, in such noisy situations, it can be difficult for your pet to hear your commands among other sounds so other methods of teaching your dog may have to be tried in these situations to keep your pet safe.

How Does SportDOG Field Trainer SD-425 Collar Work?

SportDOG Field Trainer 425 Collar

The SportDOG 425 works by remotely sending a form of stimulation to your dog’s neck.

There are seven levels of static stimulation offering an intuitive way to train your dog in a manner that is best for both you and your pet.

The stimulation can be customized and administered remotely from the handheld device giving you complete control up close or at a distance depending on how you are training your pet.

If, however, you find that the vibration settings are not appropriate for you and your pet’s needs then there is an alternative mode available which is the use of tone instead, this setting can be found on the handheld device.

Additionally, thanks to the collar’s expandable system, up to three dogs can be trained with the same handheld device without the loss of stimulation in the collars, so there is no need to juggle numerous controllers if you have more than one dog.

This feature would prove very useful when getting your dogs to socialize with each other and when teaching dogs not to get distracted by others.

Naturally, the training of your dog does not stop where water begins, so the DryTekTM technology allows effective training even when the collar is submerged up to a depth of 7.6 meters.

Therefore, you can still maintain control of your pet even while they are swimming.

This feature also means that you do not have to worry about letting your dog near water during training as the collar will still function perfectly due to the waterproofing.

Why choose SportDOG Field Trainer 425 Collar?

Sport DOG 425 reviews

The market is flooded with various qualities of remote training collars for dogs.

However, the experienced professionals at SportDOG not only know what they want for their dogs, but also know how to provide a top quality product for and your pet too.

The SportDOG collars are top of the range training collars.

The company does not cut corners on quality and pride themselves in supplying the best products with leading technology and offering fantastic customer support.

The SportDOG Field Trainer 425 is a fantastic choice for you and your pet for basic obedience training needs.

The aim of this collar is to help you train your dog to be more obedient; it can help tame a disobedient dog by preventing aggressive behaviors such as barking, and will assist you in keeping your pooch safe in potentially dangerous situations.

It may be worthwhile considering other models by SportDOG within their e-training collar range as different collars suit different trainer’s needs.

When comparing different models, I noticed that the SportDOG SD-425 has the lowest effective range out of the SportTrainerTM series of training collars.

Despite it having the shortest range, I would suggest that this is the ideal radius of which to train in for basic obedience exercises.

Having a longer range may suit other training needs such as training your dog for hunting, in which case I would suggest considering the SportDOG SportHunterTM series as it is designed specifically for those training needs.

Furthermore, the 450-meter radius seems the optimum range for standard obedience training, especially as the next step up in the SportTrainerTM range, is the SportDOG SD-825 Training Collar, of which the features are only slightly different to the 425 other than having a longer effective range.

Despite this minor difference in the training collars, the 825 is a bit more expensive than the SportDOG FieldTrainer SD-425 Training Collar.

How to Choose the Right Size Training Collar?

Sport DOG 425 Training Collar

The Field Trainer SD-425 is suitable for dogs of a weight of 3.6kg and up meaning that this collar may not be suitable for smaller breeds of dogs, young dogs or puppies.

Bearing the weight of the dog in mind, it is also important to consider the neck size of your dog as the training collar accommodates sizes between 12.7cm and 55.9cm.

Thanks to the collar’s sleek design, it should fit just like an ordinary collar as there is no external large antenna to impede movement.

You can check the size of your dog’s neck by using a cloth tape measure, but do not hold it too tight, it should sit comfortably around your pet.

However, if your dog has a thick coat then a cloth tape measure may not give an entirely accurate representation of the size of your dog’s neck, so instead perhaps try using a soft piece of string to get through some of the dog’s hair and then measure that against a ruler.

Moreover, the collar is adjustable so as long as your dog’s neck fits within the above measurements, it should fit on your dog comfortably.

How to Use SportDOG Training Collars?

SportDOG SD-425 review

The collar works by sending a signal from the handheld remote transmitter to the receiver in the collar to cause a stimulus that your dog will respond to almost instantly.

The dial on the receiver shows the numbers 1 to 7, indicating what level of stimulus should be sent to the collar, 1 being the lowest and 7 being the highest, allowing you to take full control over the experience.

The dial al shows a V/T symbol, this allows you to customize not only the level of stimulus but the type of stimulus that your dog shall receive.

V on the transmitter dial refers to vibration, whilst T refers to tone.

By pressing a button on the transmitter, the antennae on the handheld device will send a signal directly to the collar and administer the selected stimulus accordingly from a distance of up to 450 meters without any lull in efficiency.

You don’t have to worry about water either as the collar is completely waterproof up to a depth of 7.6 meters, this means that if you press the button to send a stimulus on the handheld device then the collar will still receive the signal and act accordingly even whilst submerged.
