Why Does My Dog Need a Flea Collar?

Seresto Collar Dog

It’s a good idea for all dogs to have flea and tick collars to protect them from tiny pests that are known as fleas and ticks.

When a vet or a close friend suggests a flea collar for your beloved pet, don’t feel as though your dog is dirty or unhealthy- that isn’t the case.

The suggestion of a flea collar is purely for preventing fleas and ticks, and getting rid of any who may already be there.

Dogs can get fleas or ticks in a variety of different ways from other animals to going outside.

Tall fences work to keep out most other dogs, but animals like squirrels, raccoons, and skunks are still able to hop the fence carrying fleas and ticks along with them.

Feral cats are also common carriers of fleas and ticks. Humans can also transport fleas and ticks without even knowing it.

This means that you or your friends could unintentionally be bringing fleas into your home and infecting your pets, as both types of bugs will latch themselves onto any potential host (yes, even humans) in order to find a meal.

Anytime that your dog leaves the safety of the house, he or she is at risk for becoming the next meal for a group of fleas or ticks.

Your pet is at risk even if he or she just goes with you on a short walk around the block, and is especially at risk if he or she goes camping or hiking in the woods with you.

After hiking of camping, it’s important to check your pets for fleas. Check extra carefully within the animal’s armpits, neck fur, and in their abdomen area.

Fleas and ticks are tricky to find and will try to hide.

Dogs need to be treated with flea sprays to make sure that there are no fleas hiding within their fur and causing discomfort.

How Does Seresto Flea Collar Work?

Seresto Collar Side Effects

Seresto collar for dogs work like many other flea collars do, but the difference is that this brand of collars works extremely well and is scent free and waterproof, making it easy and beneficial.

The collar is coated with the unscented insecticide that repels and kills living fleas within 24 hours.

The collar is good for 8 months and can be submerged in water, so there is no need to take it off of your pet when he or she has to endure the torture of a bath or goes for an exciting swim in the lake.

This is something that your pet will appreciate when going into the water, especially if he or she likes to swim or hates to bath.

After all, pets are like their owners, and the faster something dreadful can be over with the better.

Once a flea is repelled, it won’t be inclined to come back due to the smell of the insect repellent that is easy to smell for fleas, but unnoticeable to humans or dogs.

A flea being repelled means that it can’t attach itself to your pet and won’t cause any sicknesses or infections.

To kill the fleas and ticks that are in the area of the collar (your pet’s body), the collar releases two ingredients: Imidacloprid and Flumethrin.

When fleas or ticks come in contact with these, their nervous systems are slowly shut down, and eventually, their body stops functioning and they die.

Once the collar is in contact with your dog’s skin, the repellent spreads over his or her whole body in order to protect the whole body.

Why Chose The Seresto Flea and Tick Collar for Dogs?

Bayer Seresto Collar for Dogs

The Seresto dog collar is a great collar to invest in, and will keep your pet flea free longer than any other collar on the market, and also longer than any other form of flea treatment.

It’s able to last so long by releasing small amounts of flea repellent over a long period of time for a steady buildup of repellent on your pet.

Not only is the collar effective and unobtrusive, it’s also convenient. The collar can be put on your pet and forgotten about for months at a time- even at bath time, as the collar is waterproof.

The collar is also incredibly sturdy and won’t fall off or break when your pup gets into trouble or decides to run your living room.

In the case of the Seresto collar, sturdiness also comes with a quick-release safety mechanism that, in an emergency where your pooch gets stuck in the collar (this is very rare), can be activated.

When you or your pet activates the mechanism, the collar comes off easily and releases itself from your pet’s neck. This is helpful in the event that your pet’s flea collar gets stuck on something.

In addition to being a great choice for flea and tick prevention and treatment, the collar is also comfortable for your pet.

The collar is smooth to the touch and not too heavy for your pet to wear every day. It won’t hurt his or her neck or create irritating friction from its texture, like many other flea collars do.

For anyone who wants pet owning convenience and flea treatment wrapped into one small package, the Seresto flea and tick collar is the go-to collar.

How to Choose the Right Size Seresto Dog Collar

Seresto Flea and Tick Collar for Dogs

The Seresto flea collar comes in two different sizes: small dogs under 18 pounds, and large dogs over 18 pounds.

These sizes are great for small and large dogs, but dogs that fall somewhere in between, like pugs, have a harder time with this brand of collar.

Pugs and similar shaped dogs have thick necks but small bodies, and the Seresto collar doesn’t come in a size to compensate for this.

If the collar is too small or too large for your pug-like dog, it will still be effective, although it can be a bit uncomfortable for your pet.

So, how do you choose the right Seresto flea collar?

First, remove the collar from its protective packaging.

Unroll the collar and double check that there are no plastic connectors inside of the collar, and slide the end of the collar through the buckle on the other end.

Slide the loose collar over your pet’s head and then gently adjust the collar’s tightness (as a rule of thumb, you should be able to place two fingers between the animal and the collar).

Pull the rest of the collar through the loops and then cut any excess collar off with sharp scissors.

To decide whether or not your pet needs a small or a large sized collar, weigh your pet and assess how big their neck is.

The width of your pet’s neck can mean the difference between which size you purchase in the end.

How Do I Use The Seresto Flea Collar?

Luckily, this question has a simple answer that everyone can follow.

To use the collar, all you have to do is take it out of its packaging, adjust its size, and fasten it around your pet’s neck. From there, the collar does all the work for you.

There’s no need to take the collar off and saturate it with repellent or anything of the sorts because the collar does that by itself by slowly releasing its repellent, instead of releasing it all at once.

6. When can my dog have a bath after flea treatment?

It’s best if your pet has a bath before getting the collar, although, bathing as soon as the collar is on won’t render it useless.

It can, however, reduce the lifespan of the collar as stated above. This is due to water exposure.

7. Can I use the Seresto cat flea collar for my puppy?

There is little to go off of in order to answer this question.

To be safe, though, try to find a suitable small dog Seresto collar for your puppy. They can be adjusted to fit dogs as young as 7 weeks old.

I applied Vectra 3D to my Yorker. It contains Dinotefuran 4.95%, Pyriproxyfen 0.44%, Permethrin 36.08% and other ingredients 58.53%. Total 100.00%. Can I apply Seresto Sense? I applied Vectra 3D or should I wait till the 30 days. Is over before I use the Seresto? The dog is a small Yorker.

    1. It’s best to wait 4 weeks before applying another treatment. Did Vectra 3D not work on your dog?

  2. Jude

After using the Seresto tick/flea collars on our giant and toy dogs for several years without any problems, one of the small dogs seemed to became very allergic to it after a week wearing new one. The other dog had only had the collar on overnight and presented with loose bowels and lots of vomiting.

Collars are off both dogs and their symptoms are settling down, thank goodness. The big dog isn’t having any problems at all, to date.

All very distressing and I had always sworn by these collars an had felt confident using them on my doggos without anything going wrong. I’m at a loss, as to why now???
